It all started very innocently a little over a month ago, while we were on vacation in the Outer Banks. My sister and I were in a confectioners’ store in Avon, Hatteras Island, and I tried on this hat:
We laughed, and I bought it. Mind you, this is the first hat I have ever purchased, ever, in 50+ years.
I quickly discovered that a hat like this helps keep a person cool on a hot day. I had always thought hats would be too warm to wear in the summer but just the opposite is true. It was comfortable, and I was pleased.
The next day sis and I were out shopping and I found this hat…
…and I had to have it. This one was a little more dressy and went nicely with skirt-and-top outfits.
Then a few days later sis and I were shopping in Nags Head and I found these hats:
The black one is particularly spiffy.
And then while fishing on Avon Pier I found this hat:
(“Highway 12: One Road In, One Road Out” – the history of Hatteras Island in an nutshell.)
All of a sudden, in a weeks time, I had gone from zero-hats-ever to the owner (and wearer) of five hats.
The hat-bug had bitten!
Then when we got home I found these at the Dollar Store…
…and then this one on sale at Macy’s…
…and then just the other day my husband’s aunt gave me this one – what a bright and cheerful color!
Don’t ask what got me started on hats. I’m just glad it happened.
The thought didn’t enter my mind while we were on vacation, but I have a feeling these hats may come in handy post-surgery.
But more than that, I love how they make people smile. I’ve had so many strangers come up to me, beaming, saying “I LOVE your hat!!” They brighten peoples’ day… and that brightens mine. More than reason enough.
I think real hats are making a come-back. A lot of the catalogs I see have brimmed hats and newsboy flat caps. And now I’m seeing some Sinatra fedoras, too. Those you are showing are just dandy. Number 2 and the yeller one just have an extra lilt. Huzza! Huzza!
Thanks! And I agree – I see quite a few in the fashion magazines these days too. I think maybe Kate’s royal wedding guests have something to do with the trend.
I enjoy guys’ hats as well, when they go beyond the typical baseball cap. Here’s to hats!
Glad to be a part of your hat journey!
I’m glad you were there to help launch it!
The open weave straw ones are great for hiking. Keeps you cool and keeps the bugs away from the ears without any bug spray. It’s amazing how the brim disrupts the flight pattern so that they don’t get near the ears. Um, yes I do have several hats, quite a few that I’ve kitted for witner too as well as an assortment of straw hats for spring, summer and fall!
Good point! I’ve noticed less bugs too. So many reasons to have hats! 😉 What kinds of hats do you recommend for the cooler months?
Winter wear, anything felted or just plain knit without felting. Well one of my best was acutally crocheted. I like stuff that cover the ears during winter to keep me warm. Several years ago Bob got me one (Acutally a men’s cap) but it has little flaps that are normally folded up inside but can fold out and down over the ears. Yes,you can detect a theme here when it comes to cold weather … keep the ears warm. If the knit hat has been felted usually you can make some nice brim shapes becuase htye are a little stiffer.
Sounds good Sharon – thanks!
pegster. oh my gosh. more proof we are cut from the same bolt of cloth. these are fairly FABULOUS and you look pretty darned terrific in them. i am pleased as punch!!!
You knows it woman! 🙂 Glad you like ’em! Any tips on winter-wear? 😉
I hadn’t thought about this before, but my mother didn’t wear a hat to my wedding because, even though it is a French tradition, she rightly told me that she doesn’t have a face for hats. I suppose all the ladies who showed up to my wedding with hats, which was practically everyone over 30 or married, took their cue from my mother-in-law instead. I wonder now if that made a bit of a scuffle on the evening about which I wouldn’t have had the faintest clue.
