Isaiah 1:1, 10-20 and Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16
Visiting Clark’s Bethel United Methodist Church on Hatteras Island (Outer Banks) my mother-in-law, niece and I were thrilled to discover a vibrant congregation and excellent preacher our first Sunday here. The quote above is from his sermon entitled “Religion or Relationship?” and I thought it was worth quoting, remembering, and sharing. Kudos to pastor J. Cris Noble for the quote and the inspiration.
How easily we all get distracted from the Main Thing! Even within the church, we get so busy “doing church”, keeping up rituals and traditions, or observing the latest in church growth and trends, that we lose sight of He Who Is The Main Thing.
What really pleases God? Faith in Him. Nothing more, nothing less. Maintaining a loving relationship with Him. Listening to Him, doing what He asks us to do, enjoying His presence, sharing our hearts with Him, trusting Him, walking with Him, getting to know Him better with each passing day.
That’s a quick summary of what the pastor said. And quoting from Hebrews 11, he reminded us that for those who choose live by faith, “God was not ashamed to be called their God”. Amen, Lord.
