“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he shall crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” – Genesis 3:15, in which God is speaking to Satan
(This article is directed towards our women readers, but guys are welcome to read and comment too.)
These words are spoken by God immediately following the story of Adam and Eve and the apple. Before anything is said to Eve about increased pain in childbearing, or to Adam about being dust and returning to dust again, God curses the serpent and gives hope to His fallen children with the words spoken above. He gives us this promise: someday the offspring of Eve will crush the serpent’s head and reverse the curse of the Fall. (Note: no one ever survives a head-crush…)
What good news this is! Have you ever thought about sin and death and life quite this way before? The deceiver who causes so many injuries to the people we love — through sickness, death, addictions, fears and terrors, dangers, or hard-hearted attitudes and actions — will be crushed someday by Someone born of a woman. And all women are called to the battle too — to stand tall as daughters of Eve (whose name means “mother of all the living”) and fight against the offspring our ancient enemy.
So following in the footsteps of Eve and of Mary, we too take aim — with our prayers and the truths we speak and the love we share — confident not in our own strength but in the power and victory of Jesus, offspring of Eve, son of Mary.
Don’t ever let anyone tell you you have nothing to offer, or are too weak to fight… even the most gentle and soft-spoken of words are heard in heaven and will take on eternal meaning.
